The State of Santa Catarina has a great variety of birds combined with a fantastic scenery.

Florianópolis city with its environmental diversity of beaches, dunes, forests, wetland, lakes and swamps, keeps over 300 species that were already reported here. The inland and the mountains keep rare birds that can only be found here, like the Cinclodes pabsti, the Stymphalornis acutirostris and the Hemitriccus kaempferi.

The tours are guided by a bird specialist. He has been working with birds in the south of Brazil for more than ten years.

We offer birding tours in easy and medium level hikes:

Promontório Ingleses-Santinho

Difficulty level: moderate with uphills.

Meeting time and place: at 7.30 am in front of the old church at the south end of Praia dos Ingleses. 27°26’37.90” S  48°22’36.02” O

The borderline of Praia dos Ingleses and Praia do Santinho is the eastern point of Florianópolis.

This borderline  is a large rock (promontório) covered with diversified vegetation, like  palm trees and trees characteristic of coastal Atlantic Forest. This biome is a place of food and shelter for several bird species.

You will hike through the forest on this rock (max altitude is 120 mts) with good chances of seeing Tirivas, Saíras and other songbirds. As the trail approaches the ocean, you will walk on the rocks to watch seabirds like Fragatas, Trinta-réis, Atobás, seagulls and others. Take your time to enjoy the scenary as well. You will be in the most priviledged place in the island to see the islands of Mata-Fome and Badejo.  From there you can also see the Arvoredo island.

In the way back, you have the option to come back the same way, or hike in the sand dunes to see other birds.

  • The trekking is 4 or 4,8 km lomg. The 4,8 km is for the option to hike back in the dunes. It can take from 2 to 4 hours depending on the client´s pace;
  • It is a medium level hike, with uphills;
  • We suggest you wear light clothes of neutral or nature colors. You should take sun screen, insect repellent and a water bottle;
  • We offer the options for you to hire a binocular (Mormaii basic) at an extra price;
  • Although the birding guide speaks average English, 98% of our birding clients are foreigners, and they give us great testimonials: http://braziltrails.com/wordpress/florianopolis/testimonials/
  • Lunch is not included, but there is a seafood restaurant at the end of the trail as a lunch option.
